Artist Monica Shanta Brown worked with the whole school at Dunsford Primary to design and produce a large outside permanent piece of art reflecting the school ethos and logo. The piece needed to be visible at the main entrance and be weather-proof and permanent.
Annie and Roger Kirk attended the official unveiling of the mosaic and were struck by the range of ideas about the life of the school incorporated into the design and the enthusiasm of the children who helped create it. Terrific!
The artist involved, Monica, writes:
“A few weeks ago I drove along the stunning Dartmoor Teign valley to Dunsford Primary School for a design planning meeting with the school council. I found a charming and welcoming school in a beautiful village, and I felt very lucky to be an artist in such a place.
“The council of representatives from each class, ranging in ages from 5 to 11, did their school proud. They took me for a tour around their school, and they told me all that it would be important to include as representative of their school in the design of their playground mosaic. By the end of the session we had decided on the best wall, an oval shape for the mosaic, the dimensions, and we had a design sketch for me to work from.
I returned on the 11th and 12th of February to do 2 day long workshops making the mosaic. The school library temporarily became a mosaic workshop where every child in the school had a part in making their playground mosaic, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The children and staff were very enthusiastic as they saw the whole mosaic develop. And the last comment from a child at Dunsford Community Primary School was – ‘Are you sure that this has to be your last day here?’
I hope that the mosaic is something that they will all enjoy and feel proud of for many years to come.
