Powderham Castle hosted a brilliant evening in December! The Helen Foundation, one of Powderham’s Charities of the Year, organised a fund-raising evening featuring entertainment by Words for Voices. Guests entered the beautifully decorated hall with its giant Christmas tree and were welcomed by a much appreciated log fire in the hearth.
With complimentary mulled wine and mince pies – and plenty of lively chatter – the evening started on a very festive note, providing the perfect start to the entertainment that followed in the iconic Music Room, one of most beautiful rooms in the West Country.
Words for Voices is a group of four trained actors, with accompanying musicians, who perform across Devon in support of a wide range of good causes. Over the past 20 years many tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for charities. Their shows are unique, with an eclectic mixture of poems, dialogues, dramatised readings and songs chosen to suit to the seasons of the year. From laugh-out-loud comedy to touching pathos and profound reflection, they have audiences completely in their hands. This special Christmas performance had everything from Charles Dickens to Thomas Hardy, from Gervaise Phinn’s hilarious nativity play to Joyce Grenfell’s immortal Nursery School.
A specially commissioned pastiche of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five brought howls of laughter from the audience who departed the event with broad smiles of delight on their faces. “I really feel Christmas has started!” enthused one happy guest on leaving. Mezzo-soprano Helen Haviland was especially mentioned for her beautiful voice and exquisite phrasing so well suited to the Music Room.
