Helen Foundation Raffle Prize hits the high notes

May 1, 2012

Last year, Shaldon Church Visiting Reader, Don Tucker, won the first prize in the raffle held at the THF benefit Concert in St Peter’s Church, Shaldon.

He writes:
“On the 15th of April 2011 my wife and I attended a Helen Foundation benefit concert in St Peter’s Church. The Exeter choir were superb, the Marimba music was sensational, and then we were the lucky winners of the special raffle prize. The prize had been donated by Dan Newell a personal friend of Roger and Annie Kirk, and co-Principal trumpet player with the London Philharmonic. It was an invitation to attend a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London, and two tickets would be made available for any one of the concerts during the season. Unfortunately a visit to London was not possible for us during that season.

In correspondence with Dan Newell it was suggested that the tickets could be passed onto my cousin William Tucker. William is a pianist, had visited Chopin’s home on Mallorca during 2011 and there was a Chopin concert on the programme. Arrangements were made by Dan Newell for the tickets to be collected on the day of the concert.

William and Ewa, arrived at the theatre, and were surprised to be directed to the ticket office marked “Press, and Guests”. They were escorted to their seats in the third row of the tiered stalls from where they were able to look right across at the piano: superb seats in a packed theatre. The concert artist was Lukas Vondracer, who was to perform pieces from the Chopin collection, with Chopin’s No1 in E minor opus 32.

William and Ewa described their evening as sensational, and for William the finest performance of Chopin he had ever heard. Our thanks go to The Helen Foundation and Dan Newell for making it all possible.”

We add our own huge thanks to Dan Newell – and the wonderful London Philharmonic Orchestra – for this generous prize for the raffle!
