After more than a year of training, the big day finally arrived. And what a day it was! On the 29th September at Dawlish Warren, Helen’s TriHards took part in the Dawlish Triathlon, a sprint version of this most demanding of sports. Claire Twitchin, founder of the TriHard’s, writes:
“After feeling inspired watching last year’s Dawlish Triathlon, I decided I wanted to set myself the personal challenge of completing a triathlon myself. Being a complete novice, with limited swimming ability and no road bike I set up an online group to get others involved in motivating and supporting each other by training together. We decided to raise awareness of the fantastic charity THF whilst training and can often be spotted pounding the streets, proudly wearing our vests.
On Sunday 29th September, 43 members of the group took part in this year’s Dawlish Triathlon. After months of sea swimming training it was disappointing to have that part swapped for an additional run due to a strong easterly wind. But it didn’t put us off and all that started, completed the course: a fantastic achievement for so many taking part in what was their first event. It has been an absolute pleasure to have Helen as our founder member and hope that we have raised a good amount along the way. Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters.”
And how well the TriHards did! The organisers were amazed at the numbers running for the one team – the largest single representation they had ever seen, comprising over 10% of all the entries. And the Trihards Team 2 Relay came third! Cakes were baked by Amanda’s Bakery, Teignmouth in honour of the team and much appreciated after the event. And Claire is already taling about NEXT year’s team!
Helen Foundation Trustee Annie Kirk says, “We are so proud of Helen’s TriHards! It’s a truly inspiring story and we ask for the maximum possible support from our THF friends. If you are able to, please go on the Helen’s TriHards JustGiving page and sponsor them. The page remains open for another month. If you are a UK tax payer, an extra 25% is added to your donation and that comes straight to the charity. It’s all totally secure and easy to use. It’s a brilliant way of making a donation to THF and show your support for this remarkable team. We are so proud of the TriHardsl!”
