Youngsters at Haytor View School created their own film called Our Buckland, Our Film. The project enabled the children to use iTouch cameras to collect footage of life on the Buckland estate in Newton Abbot.
The children edited the footage into a film that premiered, Hollywood style, at a local cinema – complete with red carpet and an audience that included parents, relatives and the whole school bussed in specially! This project was supported by National Lottery funding and several organisations including, of course, The Helen Foundation.
One of the great benefits of the project is that by purchasing the equipment for the school, it leaves a lasting legacy that the children will be able to access for a variety of media-related projects.
To make the film, the children talked to key characters including one of the first residents on the estate and a local historian. The film captures the memories from key facilities on the estate – such as the local School which opened in 1955. The children developed skills such as team work, time-management and self-discipline by taking responsibility for directing, filming and editing the film footage.
