ARTS WORKSHOPS IN SCHOOLS

Denbury School

Last year, with support from THF, Denbury engaged Daisi-registered percussionist Lyndon Forster to work with children in their Bellover class. The school said:

“The musician running the workshop, Lyndon Forster, inspired the children and taught them how to play percussion instruments and create their own rhythms. Lyndon started the session by playing a piece of music to the children and asking them to draw or think about what image comes to mind when they are listening. They discussed the power of music and how it can make you feel different emotions and create different images in our minds.  The children listened with attention to detail, developed their understanding of the history of music and showed confidence when performing to the group. What a fantastic opportunity provided to the children of Denbury Primary by The Helen Foundation.”

Lyndon commented: “Thanks again so much to The Helen Foundation and their supporters for funding these workshops and giving children across Teignbridge the opportunity to have these sorts of experiences. It really is such a privilege for me to be able to get to share what I love with children.”

The children said:

I enjoyed the handpans even though it was tough because it was my first time playing it. Thank you, Lyndon, for coming and teaching us. I adored it!  - Jake

I loved everything about it. The handpans, the drums, and my favourite part was listening to Lyndon playing music with the handpans.  -  Niamh

I learned that anyone can be a musician if you try and how easy it was to make a rhythm.  - Carrie

Gatehouse Primary Academy

Using their THF subsidy last year, Gatehouse Primary Academy engaged Daisi-registered artist Monica Shanta to run a workshop entitled ”Expressing emotions through art.”  It was a brilliant day of art making!

Gatehouse collected together the children’s reactions and said:

Dear Helen Foundation and DAISI,

We have collated all the feedback from the 27 children who took part in the Art Workshop into one big letter, with the help of our teachers. We absolutely loved the workshop and really enjoyed the day learning about expressing our emotions through art. It was fantastic to learn about the different ways we could do this and the materials that would be the most effective.

We all enjoyed making the big pictures together. We worked collaboratively to create a giant piece of art work. We had to make sure we were wearing aprons because the paint was really messy and would have gone everywhere but this made it really fun and exciting. We enjoyed working with our friends because it was so fun and it was good for us all to talk about different emotions and how this feels for each other.

We all really enjoyed the day and it was great to work with a real artist. Thank you so much for letting us take part!

Yours sincerely,

The year 3 and 4 children at Gatehouse.

Kenton

Using a THF subsidy, Kenton Primary engaged Daisi-registered  artist Jess Carvill to work with their pupils  to create an ambitious large-scale felt artwork inspired by, and representing, the school’s logo. The finished artwork is now on permanent display in school.

The children said:

I really enjoyed doing the felt art. I found it a little hard to shape the flower but I like that you actually let us do it ourselves unlike other people who do it themselves - Jodie

I enjoyed the bit where we massaged the big picture. I learned it was just like watering flowers with the spray when we were sticking the flowers to the base. It felt very satisfying and it looked amazing - Clint

Thank you for our workshop. We all really really love mixing the soap on the felt.  It was joyful. Actually, everyone loved it. I remember when we all had a foam fight. It was the best ever and I tried my best to make a flower. - Ryan
